To the Somali Woman

I mark this day as a tribute to some special women – the diligent women of the Horn.

for their unflinching efforts in the rebuilding of a nation in tatters.

for standing by our side in times of affliction and agony

for the resilience, strength and perseverance in the most hostile environments

for the schools, hospitals, Madrasas, and Orphanages they’ve built from their contributions and Hagbad

for tenderly tending to our wounds when the rest of the world gave us guns to massacre one another

for the homes they built us in the dry, arid lands

for housing and tending to our dispossessed and feeble

and last but not least,

for their lasting sanity in an insane state.

Ilaahay haybad gaar ah ayuu siiyey haweenka Soomaaliyeed.
